Generate your story in five steps
None of this takes longer than a minute, and only the first step really needs you to think.
Enter your idea
A single line is enough. "A night porter meets the same guest twice" is a story waiting to happen. Add as much detail as you want; longer stories have more room to use it. If nothing comes to mind, press Surprise me and one of the genre's own prompts drops into the box.
Choose a genre
Genre does more than decide the furniture. A mystery has to plant its clues before it answers them, a bedtime story has to wind a child down rather than wake them up, and flash fiction has to be finished in five hundred words. Pick one of the fifteen and the story gets built to that shape.
Set the tone
Ten tones, from suspenseful to dry and funny to flatly serious. Tone and genre work together rather than fighting: a humorous horror story is a real thing and this will write you one.
Pick a length
Short is roughly 350 words and takes two minutes to read. Medium is around 800. Long runs to about 1,600 and has space for scenes rather than summary. Twenty languages sit under More options, and the story is written in the one you choose rather than translated into it.
Generate, then make it yours
The story appears a few words at a time so you can read as it goes. When it stops, everything on the page is editable. Change a name, cut a paragraph, or press Continue to carry it further. It saves as you type.
An idea is all you need
This tool exists to get you past the blank page. Whether you have been writing for twenty years or you started last week, the hard part is the same. Something has to exist before it can be made good. Give the generator an idea and you have a draft to argue with in under a minute.
Any idea will do. A fable, an adventure, a love story that leaves you misty eyed, a horror you will think about at two in the morning. That one line is the seed the whole thing grows from, and the more of it you write, the more the story has to work with. If you would rather write in Spanish, Urdu or Japanese, choose it from the language list and the story comes back written in that language rather than translated into it.
You can shape the tool to the way you work. Genre, length and tone sit in the panel, because those are the three that change a story most. Behind More options is everything else: who the story is for, the character names you already have in your head, the language, the point of view, the setting, how it should end, and a list of words it must never use.
You also do not have to let it write the whole thing. Plenty of people use it purely for the spark. Enter a prompt, read what comes back, take the one paragraph that unlocks the project you were already stuck on, and close the tab. That counts as using it properly.
When the story stops, nothing about it is fixed. Click into the text and rewrite as much as you like, or press Continue and it carries on in the same voice from wherever you left it. Everything you generate is kept in your own browser, so the shelf is there when you come back, and one click downloads any of it as a plain text file.

Is this AI story generator free to use?
Yes. It is free, there is nothing to buy and there is no account to make. Fill in as much or as little of the panel as you like, press Generate, and the story is yours. You can use what it writes commercially, as long as you follow the terms.
Do I have to sign up?
No. There is no login anywhere on the site. Stories you generate are saved in your own browser so you can come back to them, and they never reach a server we control.
How long does a story take?
The first words appear in a second or two and the rest arrives as it is written. A short story finishes in well under a minute. A long one takes a little more, and you can read the opening while the ending is still being written.
Can I edit the story afterwards?
Yes, and you should. Click into the text and change anything: the title, a name, a whole paragraph. Your edits save automatically. There is also a Continue button that picks up where the story stopped and carries it on in the same voice.
What genres can I write in?
Fifteen: adventure, fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, thriller, romance, comedy, drama, historical fiction, children's stories, bedtime stories, fairy tales, flash fiction and inspirational. Each one changes how the story is built, not just the words it uses.
What languages does it support?
Twenty, including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. The whole story is written in the language you pick, title included, rather than translated from English afterwards.
Who owns the story it writes?
You do. Publish it, sell it, adapt it, hand it in as a draft to work from. We claim nothing. Bear in mind that AI output is not always eligible for copyright protection in every country, so if that matters to your project, check the rules where you are.
Will it write the same story twice?
Not in practice. Generate twice with identical settings and you get two different stories, because the same idea has more than one honest version. Press Write another as many times as you like and keep the one that works.
Can I use it for schoolwork?
As a starting point, a brainstorm or a structure to argue with, yes. As something to submit as your own writing, no. Most institutions treat that as misconduct and most of them can spot it.
Does it store what I type?
Your idea and options are sent to the model that writes the story and are not kept afterwards. Finished stories are stored in your browser, not by us. The privacy page sets out exactly what happens to what.
