Privacy policy

The short version

You do not create an account and we do not ask who you are. What you type in the generator is sent to the AI service that writes the story and is not kept afterwards. Finished stories are saved in your own browser, not on our servers. We set no advertising or analytics cookies of any kind.

Who we are

StoryGenerate is operated by Poemly, International House, 12 Constance Street, London E16 2DQ, United Kingdom. For anything in this policy, write to support@storygenerate.io. We are the data controller for the limited processing described below.

What we process, and why

What you type into the generator

Your idea and the options you choose are sent to Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, which generates the story and returns it to your browser. We do not store the request, the story, or any link between them. Please do not put personal information about yourself or anyone else into the idea box; the tool does not need it and there is no reason to send it anywhere.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing the service you asked for by pressing Generate.

Technical request data

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard request information for every visit: your IP address, the page requested, your browser type and the time. This is used to serve the site, to keep it available, and to stop automated abuse of the generator. Your IP address is also held briefly in memory to count generations against a daily ceiling. It is not written to a database and it is not combined with anything else.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in security and in keeping a free service running.

What stays in your browser

Three things are stored locally on your own device, using browser storage rather than cookies:

• The stories you generate, so your saved shelf is there when you return.
• Your last set of options, so you do not have to set them again.
• Your light or dark theme choice.

None of this is transmitted to us and none of it can be read by us. Clearing your browsing data deletes all of it permanently, including your stories, and we hold no copy to restore. Download anything you want to keep.

Cookies and tracking

We set no cookies. There is no advertising network, no analytics script, no social media pixel and no third-party tracker on this site. That is why you have not been shown a consent banner: there is nothing to consent to.

Who else is involved

• Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service generates the stories. Prompts are processed to produce your story. Microsoft states that Azure OpenAI does not use customer data to train its models.
• Cloudflare hosts and delivers the site and provides protection against attacks and abuse.

Both may process data outside the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area. Where that happens, transfers rely on the safeguards those providers have in place, including standard contractual clauses.

How long anything is kept

We keep no story content and no prompt content at all. Technical request logs held by our hosting provider are retained only for as long as they are useful for security, which is a matter of days. The rate-limit counter is discarded within twenty-four hours and does not survive a restart.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. In practice there is very little for us to act on, because we hold no account and no stored content about you. If you believe we hold something concerning you, write to support@storygenerate.io and we will respond within one month. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or to your local supervisory authority.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly process their data. Younger writers are welcome to use the generator with a parent or teacher, and the age settings under More options exist for exactly that.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be summarised here rather than slipped in quietly.
