The old shape, told plainly: three tries, a bargain, and a cost.
Your story appears here as it is written. Set the options on the left and press Generate.
Fairy tales have a structure older than the novel and it still works. A bargain is struck, three attempts are made, and the magic is paid for. The generator follows that shape deliberately rather than writing a fantasy story in a cottage.
It also keeps the narration flat, which is the register the form depends on. Fairy tales report extraordinary events in the same voice they use for the weather, and that steadiness is what gives them their strange authority.
What this generator is aiming for
The bargain is the story
Something is given and something is owed. Every good fairy tale can be summarised in one sentence about an exchange.
Three attempts
Two failures and one success, or two successes and one ruinous failure. The pattern is what makes the ending feel inevitable.
Magic has a price
Free magic has no consequence, and a story with no consequence has no ending. The debt always comes due.
Fairy tale questions
Is this the same as the fantasy option?
No. Fantasy builds a world with rules and lets characters live in it. Fairy tale uses the folk structure and the flat narrator, and it is shorter and stranger as a result.
Can I get a modern fairy tale?
Put the modern setting in your idea. The old shape sits surprisingly well on a call centre or a housing estate.
Are they suitable for children?
Set Written for and they will be. Left unset, expect something closer to the originals, which were never as gentle as their reputation.
